How does the rental process work?

Don’t stress, there are three easy steps to self-storage:

Visit www.carolinastoragedepot.com to start your reservation. Click on Units & Services to determine which size unit will fit your need and your budget. After identifying the unit you’d like to reserve, click New Reservation, complete the contact form, select your unit and submit. If you’re still not sure how big a unit to reserve, use our online estimator and you can always change the unit size before moving in if you change your mind.

A Storage Depot team member will be in touch by phone within 24 hours (excluding weekends and holidays) to complete your reservation. From there, your rental paperwork will be emailed to you to review and sign electronically.

Now it’s time to store! After e-signing your paperwork, create an account on our website using your unit number and door access code to make your first payment. (You’ll also be able to enroll in auto-pay from this account, so you never have to worry about late fees or being locked out of your unit.) Your first payment MUST be received for your door code to be activated. On the day of your move-in, enter your code, move your belongings into your unit and put a lock on your door. *Note: Locks are not supplied by The Storage Depot; please remember to bring your own.

Do I need to make a reservation online?

It’s like a hotel – you don’t need a reservation, but it’s better if you have one. Reservations are how we keep track of all our inquiries and make sure we reserve the perfect unit for you. You can reserve a unit up to 10 days in advance. A step-by-step guide to reserving a unit can be found by clicking on the link about the reservation form.

Can I rent a unit in person or over the phone?

We designed our website to make renting storage fast and easy online – but you’re also welcome to call us anytime at 828-263-6146 to reserve a unit.

What size self-storage units do you have?

Our standard sizes range from 5’x5′ to 10’x23′ and are approximately 8’ high (all dimensions are approximate). We also offer half-height storage lockers which are great for storing luggage, holiday decorations, and other bulky items from around the house that tend to cause clutter. From storing one room of furniture to storing your whole house, use our Size Guide to find the right amount of space for you.

Are all of your units climate-controlled?

Yes! Our buildings and units are designed to maintain a set temperature range of approximately 55-80 degrees using A/C and heat.

What's the difference between an office storage and self storage unit?

The only difference between the two is the door type. Self storage units have roll-up doors similar to garage doors – they roll up overhead for easy access. Office storage units have 30″ wide swing doors that are hinged to one side like an office or closet door.

Do you offer RV/boat/car/motorcycle parking?

Yes, parking storage is currently available at our Mills River location. This facility features a fenced and gated parking area with various size spaces and offers 24-hour access. We do not have parking storage available in Banner Elk or Newberry at this time.

Do you provide locks or will you keep a key to my storage unit?

No. Our units have been designed to accept a standard padlock which can be purchased at any local hardware store. We recommend a lock with an extended shackle similar to this one (https://www.masterlock.com/personal-use/product/140DLH) for easier locking and unlocking. Keys for your individual lock are not and will not be held in the facility office.

Do you have handcarts or dollies I can use at your property?

Yes. You’re welcome to use our complimentary carts and dollies while you’re at the Storage Depot. When you are done using please place all carts and dollies in their designated area by main entry to the building. Failing to return equipment or removing it from the building may result in fines.

Do you have a lift gate or an elevator for moving in and out?

All of our facilities have a commercial loading dock and loading zones to make move in & out a breeze. The Banner Elk and Mills River locations are all on ground level and the Newberry facility has a freight elevator to access units on the upper floors.

When can I access my storage unit?

The Storage Depot at The Great Train Robbery is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Access hours are from 7:00am – 9:00pm.

Will my belongings be safe?

Very safe. Here’s what we do to ensure the security of our building:

  • State-of-the-art digital video surveillance systems
  • Motion detectors and after-hours security alarm
  • Electronic keypad access to property
  • Central station monitoring
  • Maintenance staff to keep everything clean and well maintained
If I rent a storage unit, can my spouse, kids, or a friend have access too?

When you rent from The Storage Depot you can allow access for other people you specify (or restrict access only to yourself). At the time of finalizing your reservation, simply provide the Storage Depot team member the names and contact information of any additional individuals you’d like to have access to your unit and the desired person will be granted access.

I forgot my door access code! What do I do?

Refer to your original lease summary; your access code will be listed at the top. We recommend printing this document and storing it in a safe place where you can easily access it. If you have misplaced this document, submit a request online or call to have your code reset.

Do you rent units month-to-month or do I have to sign a long-term lease?

Our rental contracts are month-to-month agreements – no long-term lease is required. However, if you know you are going to be renting for an extended period be sure to ask a Storage Depot team member about long-term lease incentives.

What kind of documentation do I need to provide to rent a storage unit?

You will need to provide a valid, government-issued form of identification (e.g., driver’s license, state ID or passport).

Do I need to let you know I'm moving out?

The move-out process is easy: just let us know that you’re leaving and empty your storage unit. As a courtesy, we ask that you give notice at least 10 days before your intended vacate date. *Note: Rent is paid on the first day of each month and we will not pro-rate your last month if you choose to leave mid-month.

Do you offer or require insurance on my stored goods?

While insurance is not required, you alone are responsible for the items that you store with us at The Storage Depot. We do not have an insurance policy that will protect your belongings in the case of theft, fire, flood, pests/insects, acts of god, or any other events that may cause partial or total loss. Be sure to check with your insurance agent to verify that your items are protected; most insurance companies offer a supplemental policy for a very low monthly fee.

Do you have an automatic payment option?

Sure do. You can sign up for autopay within your online account. NOTE: Making your first payment over the phone with a credit card will NOT automatically complete your enrollment. Once you’ve submitted the online form, we’ll automatically deduct your monthly charges from a credit or debit card. No checks to mail, no late fees, and no getting locked out of your unit due to non-payment. If you don’t want your rental fee to be paid automatically, you can make a one-time monthly payment using our convenient online billing and payment option.

I don't want to pay online; can I pay in person?

Yes, but only with a check or money order; we do NOT accept cash. A secure payment drop box has been provided near the office, just inside the main entry. Remember, your payment must be received no later than the first day of each month to avoid lock-out. Please make sure your account name and unit number are clearly identified on your payment.

What if I'm late making a payment?

We bill monthly and all payments are due on the 1st of the month. However, we provide a grace period before charging a late fee. Failure to make timely payment may result in your unit being overlocked and processed for public auction. To avoid the possibility of late fees, we recommend customers sign up for autopay, so that their payments are automatically taken from a credit or debit card.
