Go Gem Mining

Many mountain towns in North Carolina have a rich mining history. Hendersonville is no different. While visiting, be sure to stop by one of the area’s gem mines and see if you can strike it rich! Gem mining is one of the most family friendly activities found on this list, and is fun for all ages! Two of the more popular gem mines are the Elijah Mountain Gem Mine (about 5 minutes from town) and the Pisgah Forest Gem Mine (located right on Main Street).

Tour the Carl Sandburg Home

Lovers of poetry and writing will find inspiration when visiting the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site. Even if you don’t enjoy poetry, you’re sure to enjoy the scenic views across the property. Carl Sandburg was awarded two Pullitzer Prizes during his career: one for his biography on Abraham Lincoln and another for his work called “Completed Poems.” The home sites on a 267 acre property, and remains much as it was back when Sandburg, his wife, and daughters lived there. The house offers guided tours only.

Grandad’s Apples N’ Such offers another of our favorite family activities. Spend fun-filled days in summer or fall on the fam. Explore a maze through 5 acres of corn fields. Feed farm animals. You can even pick your own fresh apples, and in the fall, pick a pumpkin!

Catch a Show at Flat Rock Playhouse

Flat Rock Playhouse holds the title of “State Theatre of North Carolina.” Founding by the Vagabond Players in the 1950s, Flat Rock Playhouse is a community institution. The theater hosts a full lineup of shows rankings from Broadway musicals, to dramas, to concerts. The theater is just a few minutes outside of Hendersonville, located in Flat Rock, North Carolina.

Venture Down the French Broad River

The French Broad River is one of the most scenic rivers in America. It meanders its way through the Blue Ridge Mountains. Locals and tourists alike enjoy canoeing, kayaking, and tubing down the French Broad, especially during the summertime. Trips can be arranged through a commercial company or you can strike out on your own adventure!

Flip the Paddles at The Appalachian Pinball Museum

Take a trip down memory lane when you visit the Pinball Museum on Main Stree. Replay some childhood favorites as your arcade nostalgia kicks on. For a reasonable fee, you can get all day access to 35 pinball machines and 25 classic arcade games. This is one of our favorite Hendersonville rainy day activities.
